The Appleton Estate is one of the older Rum Factories in the Caribbean. The plantation was in existence when the British captured the island in 1655. Appleton brand rum was established in 1749 and has long been considered one of the best brands in the world. During World War II, they upped their production in order to replace whiskey, which was in short supply. As a result of their efforts, their blended rums became famous for their quality. I have yet to find a smoother rum than the Appleton Reserve or Extra.
The tour of the factory is fun and informative. The guide will show you the process all the way from how cane is removed from the stalks to how is it aged in the barrels. After the tour you are invited to taste all 20 plus kinds of rums and rum cremes. Some folks have spent hours determining just which is the right one for them......grin.... Once you have decided on the ones you want, you can purchase them at good prices in the shoppe on the premises.
