Barrett Adventures the Real Jamaican Adventures.

a very local view of village life

Picture
Village life in Jamaica is a major contrast to life in the first world. Our goats are called the 'road crews' and are let out of the yard each morning to forage for themselves. They always come home by dark

Brenda and Tony are one of our favourite returning guests. They are blind, but that doesn't stop them from doing and enjoying the full spectrum of adventures that we offer. We had a fine time on our hike with Harry. They met the people, petted the baby goats and enjoyed our descriptions of the terrain

This is the Lethe Laundromat, Jamaican style. Everyone goes to the nearest stream to wash clothes and socialize while they do it.
One time I visited with my Dad for a month in Lake Placid. When I arrived home, my mother in law took one look at my white clothing and said, "gimme doze, dem disgustin". She took them to her yard and got out a tub and a blue bar soap that is pure lye (it takes the skin off my fingers in seconds). She scrubbed up the clothes, laid them on bushes around the yard to sun bleach, then rinsed and dried them. They were ten shades whiter than they had been after washing in Dad's machine.

You don't need a lot of house when it is 82F to 88F all year. You store your clothes and sleep in there. When I was first in Jamaica and living in a 12X12 shack while we were building our 14X14 board house up on our land, I came into my yard one afternoon as three school children were passing through our yard to reach their yard. As I opened the door, they looked inside, looked up at me and said, "Mrs. Barrett, all this for just the two of you?" Your bathroom is probably larger than that house. I suppose there are families of 8-10 who live in that much space, but the kids go off to school each day, bright, shiny and in well pressed uniforms.
